{ green chocolate shake }

Two weeks ago, I was faced with the same old question from the pediatrician.
"What does he eat?"
Jake has never been a bad eater. Just a picky one.
By picky I mean he only wants to eat:
fruit, bread, and cheese (or dairy in general)
Like father like son. That's a whole other story.

Well, apparently that's not a balanced diet.
Who would've known?

So after fessing up to the doctor that I offer Jake all sorts of food
but end up giving into his request for strawberries, bananas, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, etc. 
I walked out of the ped's office feeling a little bit like a school girl who failed a test.

Ever since I've been trying to figure out how to get some protein and iron into my boy's body
and I'm not opposed to deceit when it comes to his nutrition. 

I remembered my friend posted something on Facebook about a green shake she makes for her kids 
so I did a little research (meaning I typed it into Pinterest)
and put together a recipe for a 
Green Chocolate Shake


I'm refusing to call it a spinach chocolate shake because that sounds gross to me.
Green chocolate sounds fun and interesting.
Humor me, will you?
Also, please don't tell my kid. 

Anyway. I had a taste and I have to say it's not bad. 
Honestly.
It's chocolatey and creamy.
Jake drank the whole thing
...and I was happy one happy mama
because with a whole cup of spinach, almond milk, and peanut butter
a serving of this shake is giving him what he some of needs to have a more balanced nutrition. 


Here's the recipe. It makes about 4 servings. 


1 ½ c milk
½ c almond milk
1 c chopped spinach
1 tbsp peanut butter
2 tsp cocoa powder, unsweetened
1 frozen chopped banana

Throw it all together into a blender and liquefy until smooth.

My boys surprise me with their wild eating (my four year old loves mushrooms and broccoli--weirdo) but I like doing smoothies as well! Spinach is great in them, and we do lots of bananas and fruit. I think other things can be snuck in there too like wheat germ and flax seed, but I'm not sure if those actually are healthy, or just sound healthy. :) Either way, it's lovely that something so good for you as spinach but so unappealing to little kids can go into a shake! I also chop spinach finely and use it in my spaghetti sauce. You don't notice it--or if you do, you think it's fresh herbs--and it's sneakily adding its goodness to your pasta.

I'm visiting from the Lake Placid posts and photos that I've seen. I'm enjoying your blog much.

First, we do shakes in our family often. I've discovered that you can really stuff a ton of spinach in a shake without changing the taste. My kids are older so they see me do and still happily drink it all up.

Second, you are one pretty pregnant mom.

Third, I'll be back to read and comment often. Can't wait to see pics of your new baby!
